MADRID, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Real Sociedad's French-born central defender Robin Le Normand could be called into Spain's next national team squad, after he was granted Spanish citizenship on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old has been with Real Sociedad since July 2016 and has been granted Spanish nationality by ministerial order.
This means that the defender, who has played 177 times for the Basque side, is now eligible to play for Spain, given that he has never appeared for France at any level.
Le Normand was rumored to be in the plans of new Spain coach Luis de la Fuente ahead of March's games against Norway and Scotland, but had still not been granted nationality, and was injured anyway.
He is now in contention for a call-up for the UEFA Nations League semifinal against Italy on June 15 and a possible place in the final three days later.
Meanwhile, Real Sociedad, who on Tuesday beat Almeria 1-0 to move within three points of a place in next season's UEFA Champions League, confirmed that captain Asier Illarramendi will not continue at the club next season.
The 33-year-old, who has suffered from knee injuries in recent seasons, has played 195 times for the San Sebastian side, and also had two years with Real Madrid.
