DUBAI, U.A.E.: Even as the United States carried out airstrikes on Iran early on June 10, and Iran responded by attacking countries in the region, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Iran would "pay the price" for delays in peace talks.

Trump made the warning just hours after Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan, all of which host U.S. troops, were hit by Iranian attacks. It was the second time this week that exchanges of strikes had tested a two-month ceasefire. On June 8, Iran and Israel also attacked each other.

It was unclear what Trump's post on Truth Social would mean for Iran, and his comments showed his changing approach to the conflict. Just a day earlier, he had suggested that a deal to end the war could be reached within days.

Meanwhile, Iran has remained strong despite weeks of heavy bombing. It is relying on its ability to potentially block the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and natural gas, as an important negotiating advantage.

At the same time, both sides appear to be looking for a way to end the war, as long as they can present it as a victory at home. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems focused on much harder goals: bringing down Iran's religious government, ending its nuclear program, and destroying the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon. This makes any agreement more difficult.

Since the U.S. and Israel began the war with strikes on Iran on February 28, the conflict has shaken the global economy, pushed up energy prices worldwide, and made food and basic goods more expensive. The global price of crude oil rose above US$92 a barrel on June 10, an increase of more than 25 percent since the war began.

In the latest attacks, U.S. fighter jets struck air defense systems, ground control centers, and radar sites, according to the military's Central Command. Iran confirmed strikes near Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island but did not give details about the damage.

Iran's top diplomat promised there would be a response, and later Iran said it carried out attacks in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan.

Jordan said it shot down five incoming missiles, which Iran claimed were aimed at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. The base has been used by U.S. F-35 fighter jets and other aircraft. Jordan's state news agency Petra said no one was injured.

Bahrain and Kuwait said they intercepted incoming missiles but did not provide further details.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the U.S. strikes as a violation of Iran's sovereignty during calls with officials from Turkey and Saudi Arabia. He said Iran has the right to defend itself, including by taking similar action in response, according to a statement on his office's Telegram channel.
